How to Choose an Electric Standing Desk: 7 Checks Before You Buy
In short
A good electric standing desk needs a height range that covers both sitting and standing for your height, stability at full standing height, a lifting capacity about 30% above the weight of your equipment, and height memory. A quality single-motor desk like the S1 lifts up to 80 kg, takes tabletops up to 180 cm wide and two or three monitors, and suits most users up to 1.90 m tall. A dual-motor desk like the S2 adds a full height range (60-125 cm) for any height, a 120 kg lifting capacity, maximum stability at standing height and a frame that takes tabletops up to 2.2 m.

1. Does the Height Range Fit Your Height?
This is the first and most important check, and most buyers skip it. The desk needs to go down to your sitting height and up to your standing height, with your elbows bent at 90 degrees. If the range is too short, you will work with raised shoulders or a hunched back, and you lose half the benefit of the desk.
| Your height | Sitting desk height | Standing desk height |
|---|---|---|
| 160 cm | 64 cm | 100 cm |
| 170 cm | 68 cm | 106 cm |
| 180 cm | 72 cm | 113 cm |
| 190 cm | 76 cm | 119 cm |
2. Single Motor or Dual Motor?
A single-motor desk has one motor in one leg that drives the other leg through a shaft. A dual-motor desk has a motor in each leg. Both types handle daily work with several monitors. You notice the difference in three areas: height range, stability at full standing height, and how much headroom the motor has for especially heavy equipment.
| S1 single-motor | Sun single-motor | S2 dual-motor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motors | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Height range | 70-115 cm | 71-115 cm | 60-125 cm |
| Lifting capacity | Up to 80 kg | Up to 80 kg | Up to 120 kg |

The bottom line: The S1 is the best-value choice for most home and office setups. 80 kg is enough for two or three monitors, a computer and a tabletop up to 180 cm, and the range suits users up to 1.90 m tall. The S2 is the upgrade if you want the maximum: a range that fits any height (1.50 to 2.00 m), a 120 kg lifting capacity, maximum stability at standing height, a frame for tabletops up to 2.2 m and a 5-year warranty.
3. How Stable Is the Desk at Standing Height?
A desk that wobbles when you type standing up is the number one reason people stop standing. Stability depends on three things:
- Frame weight: A heavier frame wobbles less. The S2 frame weighs about 29 kg.
- Number of leg stages: A three-stage leg goes higher and lower, and the overlap between the stages should be large.
- Base width: Longer feet stop front-to-back wobble, especially with deep 80 cm tabletops.
A simple test in the showroom or on video: raise the desk to your standing height, put a glass of water on it and gently shake the tabletop. If the water keeps moving after you stop, the desk isn't stable enough.
4. How Much Weight Does the Desk Need to Lift?
The lifting capacity includes the tabletop itself, not just the equipment on it. Here is how to calculate a typical two-monitor setup:
| Item | Estimated weight |
|---|---|
| 160×80 cm MDF tabletop | 17 kg |
| Two 27-inch monitors with an arm | 14 kg |
| Desktop computer | 10 kg |
| Keyboard, mouse, speakers and accessories | 4 kg |
| Total | 45 kg |
Choose a desk with a lifting capacity at least 30% higher than the calculated weight. That way the motor isn't working at its limit, and the desk rises quietly and stays reliable for years. In this example: at least 60 kg. The S1, rated at 80 kg, lifts this setup comfortably. The S2, rated at 120 kg, is for you if you add heavy monitors, a solid wood tabletop or audio equipment.
5. What Tabletop Size Do You Need?
- 120×60 cm: A laptop and a monitor. Good for small rooms and work corners.
- 140×70 cm: Two 24-inch monitors, or a large monitor and a laptop. The most popular size for working from home.
- 160×80 cm: Two 27-inch monitors, or an ultrawide monitor with room to write.
- 180×80 cm: Three monitors, video editing, gaming or a lot of equipment.
Check the finish too: a quality tabletop has rounded corners (important when you stand close to the desk) and a cable hole. Every size is available as a desk tabletop, and a full breakdown of sizes by type of work is in our desk height and size guide. Torn between melamine, solid wood and bamboo? The full comparison is in our tabletop materials guide.
6. Control Panel, Memory and Safety

- Memory presets: A must. Save a sitting height and a standing height, and one press switches between them. Without memory, people simply stop changing position.
- Height display: Helps you return to exactly the same height and set the desk according to the calculator.
- Anti-collision: The desk stops if it hits an obstacle on the way, like a chair, a windowsill or a child. Especially important at home.
- Child lock: Prevents accidental operation.
- Standing reminder and charging ports: Nice to have. The S2 has a built-in reminder plus USB-A and USB-C ports.
7. Warranty, Service and Importer
The motor and control panel are the parts that can fail, so the warranty matters almost as much as the specs. Check three things: how many years the warranty covers, whether it includes the motor and electronics, and who provides it. An official importer with service in Israel beats a seller on an international marketplace, where a repair usually means shipping the part abroad.
Comfortly desks come with an official importer warranty: 5 years for the S2 and 3 years for the S1 and the Sun. In-home assembly is also available, along with delivery anywhere in Israel.

Electric, Manual or a Gaming Desk?
- Hand-crank (manual) desk: Cheaper, but it takes dozens of turns to go from sitting to standing. In practice, most people stop changing position after a few weeks.
- Desk converter: Sits on an existing desk and raises only the keyboard and screen. A temporary fix that takes up depth and is usually less stable.
- Gaming desk: Usually a fixed desk with styling and lighting. If it doesn't adjust, it doesn't solve the height problem. An electric adjustable desk with a 160-180 cm tabletop works great for gaming too.
- Electric desk: Rises and lowers at the press of a button, in seconds. It is the only option people actually keep using over time.
